Parks Canada requires all adult visitors to Canada’s national parks to buy a permit for the duration of their stay to support visitor services and facilities. Day Passes or a yearly Discovery Pass are available to buy in-person at Parks Canada's park gates and information centres in Banff and Jasper. The “Discovery Pass” is what Parks Canada calls their year-long (365 days from the purchase date), multi-park entry pass. This pass will give 365 days of access to all participating national parks in Canada.

The boat is heated with comfortable seating (but no washrooms). I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of meals they offer. Although they’re pricier, they also serve huge portions, so we went on the cruise with full bellies. The 3-tier parking lots are on the left side just before you reach Maligne Lake Chalet. While it was once called by Indigenous people Chaba Imne, aka the Beaver Lake, the lake was later renamed by Mary Schäffer. Her exploration crew was the first to document the Maligne Lake after its discovery in 1908 and named it Maligne Lake, after the Maligne River that feeds the lake.

This is where you’ll find parking for Maligne Lake, a boat dock, a canoe house, a gift shop, and a few restaurants like The Lake House Café and Waffle Hut. Maligne Lake is one of the most stunning lakes in all of Canada, and embarking on a cruise here offers a front-row seat to this natural spectacle. Venture south, closer to the glaciers, and you’ll be treated to the lake’s captivating emerald hues. Jasper is a hiker’s paradise, and the Maligne Lake area has several hikes for various skill levels. I recommend booking the Maligne Lake Cruise for early morning or late afternoon. The water is calmer, and the sun is gentler, making all the beautiful colours pop without the harsh reflections.

This spot is significant to the people who have lived in and around these forests, and I love seeing what I just learned about in the tour portion of the ride. Here, the boat will dock, and you’ll get to spend about 15 minutes soaking in the views of the lake. If you love nature like I do, the tour is worth it just for the vantage points you’ll have from this island. Classic Cruises lasts around 1.5 hours, while Premium Cruises take 2 hours, excluding the loading time. It’s advisable to arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled departure.
There is no food or drink offered on board, so eat beforehand. Upon reaching Spirit Island, the boat docks, allowing guests to disembark and follow a brief nature trail leading to a viewing platform that unveils one of the most breathtaking scenes. The Classic Cruise allows for 15 minutes of free time in the vicinity of Spirit Island.

You can easily plan to spend the whole day at the Maligne Lake area to truly enjoy it, including the drive to get there, the cruise, hikes, and several stops for wildlife watching. For families with young children, it’s worth noting that children aged 5 and under ride for free. The mid-cruise walk on shore by Spirit Island is the best, especially if you have a toddler like us and can’t expect them to sit still for an hour.

Alternatively, you can bring your own kayak, fill out the self-certification permit located on the shore or online (no fees involved), and have fun. Spirit Island is located in the ‘Hall of Gods’ as Mary Schäffer named it, and you can see why the moment you arrive and notice the surroundings. This canyon is deeper by 40 meters than other parts of the lake and is surrounded on three sides by the same mountain range.

Allow either before your visit to Maligne Lake or after so that you can stop at some of the incredible sights on the way. July and August provide the best chance for a sunny day in the Rockies, though it’s mountain weather, and you never know what can happen here! Cruises start running at 9am, and because mornings on the water are some of the calmest (and our favorite), we would recommend purchasing a tour as early as possible. This will also still give you excellent morning light on Spirit Island. The Premium Cruise also runs in the evening and is the last cruise of the day. This means you’ll have the best possible light on Spirit Island as you’ll get there around Golden Hour.

It is ONLY the best value if you are traveling alone and only plan to visit a national park for a couple of days. Hotel pick-up and drop-off are included and we found the guides excellent at helping you spot wildlife and telling you the history of the area. You’ll pass forests, mountains, and lakes as you go, and possibly spot some elk on the way! There aren’t many gas stations once you leave Jasper though, so make sure you fill up your car before leaving town.
After parking, follow the short trail through a grove of trees to Maligne Lake, the ticket office, boathouse, lake house and the historic chalet. We highly recommend you allow 1–1.5 hours to drive from Jasper to Maligne Lake. During the tour, you’ll learn about the park’s ecology and history. This part of Canada has been occupied by Indigenous communities for ages, and you’ll learn about their stories as you sail around the lake. The storytelling is captivating, so you’ll feel like you’re part of the narrative as you pass by glaciers and more mountain peaks than you can count.
